VCB to 'reprogramme' after disqualification

Jamaican Gleaner
Thursday | July 7, 2011

Novlene Williams-Mills won the women's 400 metres, but there was a stunning disqualification for compatriot Veronica Campbell-Brown at the Reims International athletics meet.

Antigua and Barbuda's Daniel Bailey and Trinidad and Tobago's Kelly Ann Baptiste also registered wins, in the 100 metres, at the athletics event that took place on Tuesday.

Baptiste captured the women's dash in 11.11 seconds ahead of Oludamola Osayomi of Nigeria (11.24) and Aleen Bailey of Jamaica (11.32).

But the race was marred by Campbell-Brown's disqualification, after she committed a false start.

"I have no idea what happened, I'm just disappointed," said the Jamaican. "I'll try to figure out what went wrong and fix it for my next race.

"I'm not the kind of athlete to false start. I think I did it once Indoors, but it's not like I'm guessing the gun or anything like that, it's not me.

"Doing a false start is always a waste of time. Now I'll have to re-programme myself mentally to make sure it won't happen anymore."

Jamaicans took the first three spots in the women's 400, with national champion Williams-Mills leading the way home in 50.38 seconds, ahead of Rosemarie Whyte (50.53) and Davita Prendergast (51.14).

Mario Forsythe, another Jamaican, was the runner-up in the men's 200, setting a personal best time of 20.29 to finish behind reigning world silver medallist Alonso Edwards of Panama (20.28). T&T's Rondel Sorillo was third (20.48) and Jamaica's Warren Weir was sixth (20.87).

Bailey, the 2010 World Indoor 60m bronze medallist, topped a quality field in the men's sprint, clocking 10.05 seconds, dipping at the finish line three hundredths of a second ahead of former Olympic and World champion Justin Gatlin of the United States.

Trailing them over the line was Trinidad & Tobago's Keston Bledman, American Darvis Patton (10.15), Beijing Olympic silver medallist Richard Thompson of T&T (10.17) and Dexter Lee of Jamaica (10.28).
