Great to be able to hear it live via the VAL.

Interesting to see an under 18 athlete off 32m winning the opal by 5m! why can't anyone see this kids potential and under the natural progression of a teenager pull his mark back to what is necessary for someone of this calibre. He has run at 6/17 VAL carnivals prior to Bendigo and only nominating once at Avondale for a 400m where he was also awarded 32m however scratched this season.
His 70m mark is inflated for his age now at 6.50m, should have won the bay 70m off 7m however slipped at the start (running an unadjusted 7.462sec).
The kid has talent no doubt and he has show cased that in his heat yesterday and tonight in winning his semi by 15m and the final by 5m for the Opal.
I'm not having a go at the handicapping I just don't see how this kid can fly so heavily under the radar and post a 44.80sec.
Surely after his outstanding effort at the Bay Sheffield in December over both the 70m open (7m - 2nd), 120m Restricted (9.5m 1st) and the 120m Gift (9.5m 6th) he will be under strict watch come Stawell.

However congratulations for the VAL on another great meet integrating the cycling with the running. It made for a great spectacle for all the family and sports enthusiasts.

He has been heavily scrutinised and pulled back in all distances since the Bay Sheffield where he did not win a penalty race. Despite that he was still penalised after Bay Sheffield where he was pulled in both the 70m and Gift. He has since won a gift and been further penalised in that distance. He hasnt been good enough in the 70m after his penalty in that and that showed when couldn't make the Don Furness 70m Final.
He ran 3rd in the Northcote 400m off 39m earlier in the year and was later pulled 7m in the 400m without winning or running a time. He did not run a 400m after Northcote, but still received a 7m penalty, however he was able to improve himself whilst not competing and that is the key component for setting for races and improving performance to hopefully win. He clearly had a focus on improving himself and not running for handicap lifts or running dead in races like many. A fine effort by the young man and congratulations would be the most gracious and fitting position for such an outstanding run.

From my perspective, the 400m marks in general in the VAL have been becoming inflated. It was only a matter of time before something like this happened.

In 1985 I won the Ringwood Gift off 32m. I was off 38m the previous season, but the whole field was pulled back 6m in 1984.

I was 25 and it took me 5 years to get that mark. I did win a novice 400m off 38m at Avoca the previous season (1983). But that was my only win over the distance.

A training partner, Tony Carter went to a VRTA meeting the following week and said questions were asked about the Ringwod Gift and how did I got out so quickly to 32m. Given I started off 24m, 5 years earlier and had run in over forty 400m races  by the time Ringwood came around it was a pretty stupid reaction.

Now days it's common to see teenagers out on 32m within a couple of years and a handful of starts.
