TEA Tree Gully flyer Jordan Tronnolone continued to put the disappointment of being pipped on the line at the Bay Sheffield behind him when he won the feature race at an action-packed Hectorville Athletics Carnival at Daly Oval on Friday night.

Tronnolone (off 6.75m) won the 120m Hectorville Gift by 1m ahead of Corey Baker (7m) and David Gross (10m), in front of an excellent crowd in the second-year meet. The Paul Young trained Tronnolone said after the race he continued to use his heartbreakingly narrow loss to Jordan Caldow in last December’s Bay Sheffield as motivation.

Since that race, Tronnolone has also won over 200m at Tea Tree Gully and has been placed over 120m at Camden.

“It (placing second at the Bay Sheffield) has been playing on my mind,” Tronnolone, 21, said.

“It’s hard not to be disappointed about it but the main thing for me is just to get on with it because you can’t change what has happened ...

“I was really happy with tonight (Hectorville). It was a quality field and I had to run well to win.”

In the women’s 120m Gift, Lauren Edwards (9m) was overtaken by backmarker Emma Freer (7m) but surged again over the last 30m to win in a photo finish. Perennial contender Megan Letton (14.25m) was third.

Another of the feature races at the carnival was the 1600m backmarkers category, where 50-year-old Richard McMahon (280m) showed everyone a clean pair of heels to win in a fast time of 4:08 ahead of James Grant (280m) and Stephen Jelfs (155m).

One of the stories of the night was the win of much loved SA Athletic League starter and volunteer Brian Hart in the over-45 120m.

Hart, 74, received a huge ovation when he held on to win off 38m and then dedicated the win to good mate and fellow athletic league stalwart Alby Donnelly, who died last year.

Harry May turned heads when he came off a 26m backmark to smash the field in the novice 550m. Jake Stangewitz and Lesley Tompson won the men’s and women’s 400m respectively. Niamh Henry (26.50m) beat a fast finishing Jesse Cordoma (9m) in the under-17 100m.
