EUGENE, Ore (Sporting Alert) — Tyson Gay’s quest of dethroning Jamaican world record holder Usain Bolt of his world championship sprint titles was shattered at the U.S. Championships on Friday after he pulled out of the trials with an injury.
Gay was hoping for a re-match with Bolt and showed good signs this season when he clocked a world-leading 9.79seconds two-weeks ago.
However, the former world sprint double champion failed to show up for the semi-finals of the 100m dash in Eugene because of hip injury that will also forced him out of the 200m.
“Tyson has scratched from the 100,” Gay’s agent Mark Wetmore said in a statement.
“He was unable to warm up due to a hip and adductor problem on his right side.”
Only the top three finishers in each event at the U.S. meeting qualify for the world championships in Daegu, but USA Track and Field officials said the American record holder could still be a part of 4x100m relay team if he recovers in time.
