Will be watching with interest to see what the penalty for winning the Gift at Henley is this season.
Last four seasons have been -.25m,-.50m,-.50m, 0m
If its non penalty llike last season perhaps its best to let everyone know.

Hey whispers, any tips?
I'll give mine after I've looked over them a bit more. Gift is missing a few of the usual suspects.

Not quite right Whispers. The 2 races that the Henley winner entered after Henley were 70m races. He took a penalty there. He made the podium in one of those, so the 70m mark stayed where it was at the Pre-Bay.

Henley is not "non penalty" and never has been.

What you saw in the first half of last season, was athletes coming out and having a crack, then getting competitive marks at the Bay.

Hi Racingmania

I think theres some real hot talent on 7.50m , whether they are primed for Henley will tell on Fri night.

Hi BG

I think the winner really did well last season
Winning Henley off 6.75m then given 6.75m (so he wasnt pulled over 120m for his win at Henley) at his next start over 120m at the Pre Bay Meeting then given 7.50m at the Bay.Not to many athletes win a 120m Gift and dont go back at their next start over 120m.
Having said that, the Handicapper has certainly caught up with him after the Bay, penalising him 1.75m over 120m.
Is it possible that because he runs limited 120m, the handicappers allocation of 6.75m at the PreBay may have been an oversight and he may have snuck under everyones guard. After all you only ever hear from those who think they are hard done by.
So I guess , providing you dont run to fast around .25m penalty would be the go.

Whispers,

I stand to be corrected, but I'm tipping the handicapper DID take him back .25m (could even have been .50m). Richards didn't race Port Adelaide though. The next time that he did race (at Westerns), he was off a reduced mark (in the 70m). That is an opportunity for the handicapper to see him and "give back" the .25m.

How a runner performs in a 70m can always be taken into account when setting a 120m mark.

The winner of Henley usually gets their mark back quickly.

Jeez it comes around quick!! First meet of the season and not much talk about how anybody is travelling. A few new names and a few old ones coming out to play early on.

120m open- Hard to pick with no form but hopefully it's similar to last season with guys having a crack from round 1.
Beachies are out in force around that 7.5m mark and you would expect at least a couple of them are moving well.
Throw in the usual suspects and maybe a new kid not the scene.

120m womens- if picking the men's is tough then picking the women's is all but impossible!! So I wot even embarrass myself.

Junior races - whoever grew the most in the off season will win.

400m open - Dawkins Bulabek Rothe and Verrall should be the ones to watch.

800m open - Watkins keeps getting better and will be around the mark. Throw in Jelfs, Kane and Fallon.

Hopefully it's a cracker night!!

Rookie , dont think the Beachies will be quite ready just yet though, if you know what I mean. Twisted Evil

Konetschka was a reserve for the AFL grand final so you would expect that he could be an early mover with his handicap.

Good call on the youngsters , its amazing how some can grow out of their shoes in 6 months.

Decent numbers for the juniors in SA. Get that many and there has to be serious talent among them.

Parham or Messant for the 400 the young girl has some talent.
For the women's 120 Williams Micklethwait or Schwerdt she always consistent.

FWIW this season I've decided all new starters in junior must start on the novice mark in their first SAAL start. It's purely for consistency. In the last couple of years I've been caught out getting a little adventurous by giving generous marks to athletes on debut, to the detriment of those who had already run with the League for a season or more plus those who started off less than the winning first timer. If all athletes making their debut start off the same mark it just gives me the starting reference point going forward. There's a few kids I know in the under 18's who are going to finish a long way back in their first start but the fact they are still eligible for Under 14's and several years of Under 18's ahead of them means there's plenty of time for them to catch up. Rest assured if they compete often enough, they enhance their chance of becoming competitive pretty quickly.

On the other hand there's some athletes making their debut at Henley who will be very competitive and I expect to see one or two close up in the finals.

Good luck to all and catch you tomorrow.

Hi Racingmania

Thats one huge effort to find the time and the courage to tip in every race.

Will stick my neck out and say the good thing of the night is Konetscke, Reserve for the AFL Grand Final as a boundary ump , unless hes been on a diet of pies and ice cream since then , hes thrown in to this race with his handicap.

I'll give mine after I've looked over them a bit more. Gift is missing a few of the usual suspects.

Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Only 2 winners with Verrall in 400 men. Gericitano 800 o/35. tick tick!

Got a few close.
Would have got first 2 in the gift if Wilson had not got injured. Tucker made final. pass.
All 3 girls finalled 120 women. 2nd 4th 8th. pass.
Johnson Cassidy scratched from o/35.
Dawkins scratched 400 men.
Bulabek 3rd 400 men tick!
McMullan Farmer scratched 400 women.
Pittman 2nd 400 women tick!
Rubino winner 800 in my top 3. pass.

Juniors a nightmare to tip. Big FAIL!
Sheesh must be hard to handicap kids that improved shit loads since last year, trying to tip is bad enough!

Close with the 120m Open call with O Callahan off 7.5m and still winning it after a break.
Would have also loved to see B Wilson take the Open final and run the Novice 400m.
And yes the juniors will continue to be a testing mark to call Smile
