Young gun impresses in Black Opal

By Luke West
Bendigo Advertiser
March 9, 2014

RINGWOOD East teenager Cameron Moss showed plenty of grit and determination to take out the 400m Bendigo Bank Black Opal at the Bendigo International Madison carnival on Sunday night.

In a blanket finish, less than half-a-second separated Moss, Lawrence Coop, John Adams and Bradley Armstrong from first to fourth in Australia's richest 400m race at the Tom Flood Sports Centre.

"That last bit was tough... I was thinking I wasn't going to get there, but I pulled through in the end, so it was fantastic," 19-year-old Moss said.

"I won an under-20 race at Stawell last year, but this is sensational. I'm so happy to get over the line.

"I'll always look back on this night with fond memories.

"It's a great Gift and I'm stoked to be up there now with all the other winners of it."

Moss raced off the 15m handicap mark and won in a time of 46.36 seconds.

There was also a teenage winner in the Flack Advisory 400m Women's Black Pearl.

Ararat's Tiffany Boatman, 17, was ecstatic as she raced to the biggest win of her three-year career.

"It's amazing; I never thought I'd be able to win something as big as this," Boatman said.

"There were so many fast runners in the race, but it's such a good feeling to have won it.

"It was my first win in a 400m race as well, so that was fantastic."

Boatman raced off the 43m mark.

Natasha McDowell and Alice Platten rounded out the place-getters in the Black Pearl.

Robert Spencer delivered on his favourite tag as he won the 120m City of Greater Bendigo Thousand.

Racing off the 8.50m mark, Spencer won in a time of 12.25 seconds.

"I was really happy to run .02 seconds quicker than I did in the semi; I didn't think I'd be able to do that," Spencer, 27, said.

"It's a beautiful fast track here that is conducive to running fast times and fortunately, I was the fastest in this race, which was good."
