MCLEAN WINS GIFT AT QUEANBEYAN

The Canberra Times
15 March 1948

Having only his second start in professional ranks, J. McLean of Bowral, won the Queanbeyan Gift of £105 at the Queanbeyan Diggers' Athletic Carnival at the showground on Saturday night.

Tom Carney, of Sydney, was second. He led for 100 yards, but a desperate finish by McLean gave him victory by two yards.

Carney won the Monaro sprint of £25.

The attendance of about 400 at the evening session-was disappointing. Bookmakers did not operate on the events.

Queanbeyan Gift, 130 yards:
1 J. E. McLean (Bowral) 11 1/2yds
2 T. Carney (Sydney) 12 1/2yds
3 D. Greene (Manilla) 12 1/4yds
Time 11.4.

880 yards Handicap Final
1 E. Ford (Bulli) 62 yards
2 L. Latta. (B. Bay) 60 yards
3 E. Hill' (Corrimal) 60 yards
Time 2-15- 4/10.
