Caster Semenya blasted by meeting director after her ninth placed finish in Italy

Caster Semenya’s ninth place finish at the Rovereto meeting on Tuesday night was called ‘incomprehensible’ by meeting director Luigi D’Onofrio.

The South African world 800m champion was eight seconds off a race time she ran five days earlier.

Her time of 2 minutes, 7.16 seconds was nearly seven seconds behind Italian winner Elisa Cusma Piccione.
Semenya's Finnish manager Jukka Harkonen said: 'She had no energy during the warm-up, her legs were really heavy. She just had a bad day.

'She was totally tired and coughing the whole night. She's a 19-year-old girl and she hasn't done a lot of races like this before. She wasn't ready and we have to accept that.

D'Onofrio wasn't satisfied by the explanation however, saying: 'There's no certainty that she did it on purpose. I mean why would she? It hurts both her and the meet. But it's not a good enough explanation for me.'

It was Semenya's second consecutive loss after she came third at the Diamond League meeting in Brussels last week.

Despite her poor performance, Semenya is expected to recover for a race in Milan next week, before she travels to India for October's Commonwealth Games.
