Gay sizzles to WL 9.79secs, Ashmeade 9.96

CLERMONT, Florida - Top American sprinter Tyson Gay sizzled to world leading time here at the National Training Centre (NTC) Sprint Series, sponsored by PURE Athletics, on Saturday.

The former World Championships sprint double champion ran 9.79 seconds, beating the previous world leading time of 9.89 held by Steve Mullings. Wind 1.1m/s

Jamaican Nickel Ashmeade ran a personal best 9.96, beating his previous record of 10.05, for second while Kleston Bledman of Trinidad & Tobago also dipped below 10secs with 9.99. Travis Padgett was 4th with 10 flat.
Trackalerts.com source said Gay has decided not to run in the final.

Usain Bolt, Gay's biggest obstacle for the past three years, had ran 9.91 twice this season at Diamond League Meets in Rome and Ostrava. Gay launches his Diamond League in New York on June 11.

Gay "thanks for the congrats notes to my facebook and twitter."

"Decided I needed to challenge myself out of spotlight a little bit today. Warmed up wit my training partners just like it was practice but it was a race. A low key one – 9.79. Looking forward to adidas Grand Prix," Gay posted on his twitter page.

Tyson Gay Sends 9.79secs Warning To Bolt and Powell

Clermont, Florida (Sporting Alert) — Tyson Gay send out a stunning warning to his rivals on Saturday with a sizzling 9.79 seconds clocking in Clermont.

The American, who will be gunning to dethrone Usain Bolt of his World Championships title later this summer, sped home ahead of Jamaica’s Nickel Ashmeade, who improved his career best to 9.96 secs for second place.

Kleston Bledman of Trinidad & Tobago was also among the sub-10 seconds runners at the meeting with his time being clocked at 9.99 and American Travis Padgett, 4th in 10.00secs.

Gay’s time improved Steve Mullings’ previous world-leading mark of 9.89secs, also on the same track, which has not been recognised by the IAAF.

Gay’s run, however, is way better than the double 9.91secs performances by Bolt, at a Diamond League meet in Rome and Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava, respectively.

Asafa Powell’s best this season is 9.93secs.

Gay will be in action again at the Diamond League in New York on June 11.
