TAL - RICHMOND ATHLETIC CARNIVAL AT RICHMOND FOOTBALL GROUND

NOVEMBER 23RD, 2014

Magnificent weather with temperatures in the mid 20’s and a slight breeze, and with the ground in excellent condition, the second TAL Carnival of the season was held at Richmond. Organised by Ray Quarrell and his members of the Hobart Athletic Club the Carnival was held slightly earlier this year to avoid clashing with athletes competing in early December at the Australian All Schools, but a number of scratchings on the day did not detract from an excellent day of competition with some quality athletes using the Carnival for their build to the Tasmanian Christmas Carnivals.

Maiden 70 metres Sprint
A small field of 4 athletes competed in a straight final with second year athlete Emma Penney (9.00) winning her first sash from Grady Stretton (1.50) who had to settle for a second place in a maiden for the second time within a week, with Alexandra Hall (8.00) finishing in third place. The winner is trained by Wim Vaessen in Launceston and recorded a time of 8.39.

Mens 70 metres Sprint
Three heats with the heat winners and the next 3 fastest times to the final saw Andrew Robinson (2.00), Mitchell Gowen (5.75) and Jacod Despard (3.50) the heat winners with Despard the fastest qualifier in 7.69. They were joined in the final by John Howe, Luke Whitney and Alec Eiszele. Mitchell Gowen ran the day’s fastest time in the final recording 7.66 to defeat Eiszele (7.25) and Whitney (4.75). Gowen is in excellent form and looks set for a big season and gave trainer Wim Vaessen his second success of the
day.

Ladies 70 metres Sprint
As with the men, 3 heats with the heat winners and the next 3 fastest times to the final, Laura Nicholson (5.50), Lilly Castle (5.50) and Lauren Gorringe (4.50) all won their heats with Jaymie Hall (5.25), Abby Chapman (4.75) and Michelle Davis (5.50) also advancing. In a terrific final Jaymie Hall won her first sash by defeating the backmarker Lauren Gorringe with the consistent Lilly Castle gaining another placing in a final. The winner is trained in Hobart by Damian Lawler and the winning time was 8.56.

Mens 120 metres Gift
With a number of scratchings, the format for the Gift was 3 heats with heat winners and next three fastest times to the final. Luke Whitney (7.00) defeated Jarred Gilroy (6.00) in the first and fastest heat winning in 12.66, Andrew Robinson (2.50) did what he needed to do to greet the judge in heat 2 in 12.96 from Mark Nichols (10.75), and Alex Eiszele (11.50) looked to have plenty in reserve winning heat 3 in 12.99 from Grady Stretton (7.00). In the final Whitney exploded from the blocks and looked the winner a long way from home although last week’s Launceston Gift winner Gilroy kept him honest with his fast finish, Eiszele held on for third from another strong finisher in Andrew Robinson, followed by Mark Nichols and first year runner Grady Stretton who made the Gift final in only his second Carnival. Whitney is trained by Ray Quarrell and this was his second Richmond Gift in 3 years. The winners time was 12.58.

Ladies 120 metres Gift
As with the men, 3 heats with heat winners and next three fastest times to the final. Jaymie Hall (7.50) followed up her 70 metres success by winning the first heat from Laura Nicholson (8.00) in 13.24, the consistent Lilly Castle (7.25) edged Abby Chapman (6.00) in heat 2, and backmarker Morgan Gaffney (3.00) was successful in the 3rd heat. Lauren Gorringe (6.25) also progressed with one of the fastest losing times. In the final, Jaymie Hall started poorly but worked her way into the race and produced a strong and powerful last 25 metres to win her first Gift in a time of 14.25, with Lilly Castle producing another great effort for 2nd, and Laura Nicholson on the comeback trail showed she will  be a strong contender in the big races at Christmas with an excellent third. The winner is trained by Damian Lawler and her form indicated this may not be her last success this season.

Mens 300 metres
Due to the number of scratching, in a straight final the 32 year old former Burnie Gift winner Luke Whitney (22) followed up his earlier Gift success by bursting clear with 100 metres to run, and defying the fast finishes of Mitchell Gowen (16) and Jarred Gilroy (13) to win in 33.44.

Ladies 300 metres

In a straight final Michelle Davis (22) set a blistering pace early in the race and defied the opposition to run her down, winning in 38.19 and recording her 33rd TAL victory. The Wayne Mason trained athlete defeated the consistent Laura Nicholson (22) with Lilly Castle (19) placing 3rd, her 5th placing this season from 5 starts.

Open 1600 metres
Darren Brown (235) tasted success for the second time in 2 carnivals by repeating his Launceston victory with Gerard Lowry (280) again second, with backmarker Melanie Daniels (200) running on strongly for 3rd place. The winner’s time was 4.12.76.

Masters 70 metres
In a thrilling finish Alan Coleman (10) edged out Kate Dix (10.00) by .01, winning in 8.49, with Michael Stevenson (17) holding out Dan Lemoto (scr) for 3rd place.

Masters 300 metres
Kate Dix (50) atoned for her narrow defeat in the Masters 70 metres by winning in 37.00 from Adele Lucas (85) and Michael Stevenson (65).
