TAL - LAUNCESTON ATHLETICS CARNIVAL AT NORTHERN ATHLETICS CENTRE ST LEONARDS

NOVEMBER 15TH, 2014

The first TAL Carnival of the season was held on the synthetic track at St Leonards on a perfect day with
clear skies and little breeze. Athlete numbers were larger than previous seasons, and the TAL events
were supported by Little Athletics and NTAAB running and field events.

Mens 100 metres handicap
Backmarkers dominated the 4 heats with Jacob Despard, Jarred Gilroy, John Howe and Andrew
Robinson winning their respective heats, and all advancing through the semi finals to the final. These 4
runners were to be the backmarkers in the final where Robinson (2.00), Despard (3.00), Howe (3.75) and
Gilroy (5.0) were joined by Luke Whitney (5.00), impressive debutant Jarred Thomas (6.00), Cameron
Cranfield (7.25) and Alec Eiszele (9.25). In a close finish the 2013 Burnie Gift Jacob Despard proved too
strong for former Tasmanian sprint champion Jarred Gilroy with 2013 Latrobe Gift winner John Howe
finishing third. Although there were some timing issues early in the program, the winner’s time was
given as 10.34. Jacob Despard is trained by Ray Quarrell.

Ladies 100 metre Gift
Two heats of the Ladies Gift saw Kimberley Geelan and Laura Nicholson both win their heats in
impressive fashion. The final of the Ladies Gift saw dual Burnie Gift winner Morgan Gaffney the back
marker off 1.50, with the consistent Abby Chapman(5.00) and two promising debutants in Sarah Ashlin
(6.00) and Kysha Hill (6.00) being joined by Lilly Castle (6.25), Geelan (7.00), Nicholson (7.00) and last
season’s TAL star female sprinter Michelle Davis (7.25). In a terrific finish between the 2014 Stawell Gift
finalists, Kimberley Geelan won her first Tasmanian Gift edging out Lilly Castle with Laura Nicholson
finishing a very close third in her comeback race after a serious knee injury. The winner is trained by
Wayne Mason.

300 Metres Masters
In a small field of three, first time runner Matthew Zegveld (30 metres) proved too strong for David
Chapman (40 metres) with the unfortunate Michael Halaby suffering an injury and not able to complete
the race.

200 metres Women’s handicap
Two heats with the first four in each heat advancing to the final saw Lilly Castle (15) and Laura Nicholson
(19) the leading qualifiers from their respective heats, and were joined in the final by Morgan
Gaffney(7), Sarah Ashlin (12), Abby Chapman (12), Laura McShane (12),Michelle Davis (19), and
Kimberley Geelan (19). In a great contest the Wayne Mason trained Michelle Davis proved too strong in
the concluding stages to edge out Laura Nicholson, with Kimberley Geelan finishing in third place.

Men’s 200 metres Gift
The 4 heats were again dominated by 100 metres finalists in Jarred Gilroy, Andrew Robinson and Jacob
Despard, with the other heat winner being Mitchell Gowen. All four progressed through the semi finals
with Robinson and Gilroy winning their respective semis. Ray Quarrell trained the 4 backmarkers in the
final, with Robinson (6), Despard (7), John Howe (10), Luke Whitney(10), being joined by two Wim
Vaessen trained athletes in Ross Lovell(12) and Gowen (13). Gilroy (13) and Ryan O’Halloran (20) made
up the final field of 8. In a close race the Damian Lawler trained Jarred Gilroy held on to reverse the
earlier 100 metres result defeating Jacod Despard in 20.80, with another runner on the comeback trail
after injury, Ross Lovell finishing third from the fast finishing Andrew Robinson.

600 metres handicap
Two ladies dominated the race with Michelle Davis (75) proving too strong for Courtney Stanley (70),
with backmarker Mitchell Gowen (10) storming home for third place.

1600 metres handicap
Evergreen veteran Darren Brown (240) took the lead halfway through the race and finished in first place
by 20 metres from Gerard Lowry and teenage backmarker Corey Stanley running hard for third place.

200 metres Maiden handicap

In a straight final of seven athletes, the Fay Denholm trained Jarrod Thomas impressed from the
backmark of 14, to defeat Grady Stretton (16) and another Faye Denholm sprinter Kysha Hill (18). These
three athletes were competing at their first TAL Carnival, and all three look set for success in the future.
