Hobart Bikes & Spikes Meeting Runners99

Stars on show for carnival

THREE finalists from the men's Burnie Gift, the women's Burnie Gift winner, a teen cycling star riding from scratch and German junior champion will headline the 29th annual Bikes and Spikes carnival this weekend.

Hobart's event might not carry the same numbers or big names as the coastal Christmas Carnivals, but organisers have assembled a quality lineup for 2011 - which will be a Saturday twilight bonanza.

German Marcel Barth, a well renowned six-day rider, former under-23 world road and points score champion will compete, while Ulverstone-based Luke Ockerby will join him from scratch in the cycling races.

On the track three southern runners will suit up for the main sprinting events while Somerset sprint queen Morgan Gaffney the 18-year-old Tasmanian 100m and 200m champion who held off Australia's second fastest woman Melissa Breen in the Burnie Gift will be the one to catch in the women's field.

"The field for the cycling is sensational, it's one of our best ever," Hobart carnival organiser Ray Quarrell said.

"We've got nearly 50 cyclists coming down, including juniors.

"In the running, we've got some of the best sprinters at the moment here.

"Charlie Leek from the Hobart footy club, he came second in the Burnie Gift.

"He is in outstanding form, he has improved 10m since he joined our group, he was an 11.9, 12-second runner last year and now he is running 11 seconds, which is amazing for a kid to improve 10 seconds in one year. Jarred Gilroy, he is the state 100 and 200m champion, he ran third in the Burnie Gift and Max Waldron finished second in the Devonport Gift, also made the Burnie Gift final. Then there is Thomas Pfundt, who won the 200m and 400m double at Devonport."
