Walters wraps up gift win
WOMEN'S GIFT BY PHIL EDWARDS
The Examiner
27 Dec, 2010

IN-FORM Westbury teenager Abbey Walters claimed her sixth win of the season and the biggest of her career so far by taking out the women's Latrobe Gift yesterday.

The 17-year-old Launceston College student, trained by Fay Denholm, continued her outstanding form with a strong run to grab the $1200 first-place prizemoney from a front mark of 11.75metres in the handicap event.

Somerset's Morgan Gaffney (9m) claimed second place while Walters's identical twin sister Kate (11.50m) finished third.

Walters's winning time was 14.22 seconds in the 120m event.

"I can't believe it," Walters said. "It's my first (main) one and the one I really wanted.

"I was expecting the other runners to have a good day and expecting them to come past me ... but I just beat them to the line."

Walters said there was some sibling rivalry with sister Kate, especially since she had changed training stables from Denholm to Wim Vaessen.

"But it's really good to run with her and that special bit of incentive."

For Walters, a favourite with local pundits going into the event, it was her seventh career win.

Six have come this season, including the PCCC Burnie Gift, the Launceston Carnival 100m and 200m and the Ulverstone Carnival 120m gift and 70m.
