O'Halloran wins Latrobe Gift 1053218

O'Halloran runs race of career
MEN'S GIFT BY PHIL EDWARDS
The Examiner
27 Dec, 2010

LAUNCESTON accountant Ryan O'Halloran is $3000 richer today after taking out yesterday's 2010 Latrobe men's gift.

The 29-year-old Les Nankervis-trained sprinter is enjoying his most successful running season and backed up from his Rosebery Gift win last weekend to claim his most prestigious victory yet.

Running from a frontmark of 12.25 metres, O'Halloran held off some quality opposition, crossing the finish line ahead of 2006 Latrobe Gift winner Launceston's Thomas Pfundt (9.25m) and state 100m and 200m champion Jarrod Gilroy (8.25m).

Two false starts meant the finalists had plenty of time to think about the race but O'Halloran maintained his composure to win in 12.82 seconds.

"I just sort of had to calm myself down after each one and was very focused," he said.

"I knew I had been going all right in the lead-up ones so I felt I was in with a bit of a show and had a good heat time, so I knew I had to be up there.

"It's easily the biggest win of my career and I'm very happy."

O'Halloran gave some of the credit for the win to his new coach Les Nankervis, who took over responsibility for training the experienced sprinter when his brother Jeff, who formerly trained him, retired.

Hobart trainer Damien Lawler qualified three runners for the gift final with Rowan Mason, Jarrod Gilroy and Max Waldron all running strongly in heats and semis.

The Gift was O'Halloran's fifth win this season.
