Super Taib shrugs off handicap to take 120m Richmond Gift

By SIMEON THOMAS-WILSON

DECEMBER 02, 2013

RUSSELL Taib showed why he is one of Tasmania's most promising sprinters by winning yesterday's 120m Richmond Gift.

Taib, who started with a 6.5m handicap, held off challenges from Luke Whitney and Stawell Gift winner Andrew Robinson, who raced off a tight handicap of 1.25m, to win a thrilling race in 12.43 seconds.

The race was part of Richmond Athletics Carnival, held at Richmond football ground in near-perfect conditions.

Taib, 15, also won the men's 70m race in 7.8sec, ahead of fellow sprinting sensation Jacob Despard, who was hampered after he was forced to add another 0.5m to his handicap distance for false starting.

Despard pulled out of the 120m Gift and the 300m because of a hamstring niggle. He said the injury would be looked at by a physio to find out if it would affect his chances at the upcoming National All Schools and Schools Knockout events.

Taib said he was thrilled with the win but thought his race in the final was one of his poorer efforts of the day.

"I feel overwhelmed and very happy as it's a big race, but I thought my performance was a bit more sluggish than in the heats and semi," he said.

"I think my determination got me through."

In the women's events, Michelle Davis, 31, claimed the 120m Gift and the 300m.

In the women's Gift, Davis survived a late surge from Lauren Gorringe, who won the 70m earlier in the day. Davis's time in the Gift was 14.52 seconds.

In the 300m, Davis (39.61 seconds) finished ahead of Maddy Scott.

"I'm probably in the best form I've ever been in, especially over the shorter distances," Davis said.

In the men's events, while Stawell Gift winner Robinson's chances of winning over shorter distances were hampered by challenging handicaps, he was rewarded in the 300m.

He caught Whitney and Ryan O'Halloran on the final corner and held them off to win in 34.3sec.

Robinson was pleased with his efforts, especially given the handicaps he shouldered in the 70m and 120m Gift.

"I can't be happier. I knew it would be difficult with the handicaps I had to race from, but to run well in three finals and win one is great," he said.
