The return of the Mulgowie Gift

By Ann Kirby
Valley weekender
Friday 5th October 2012

BRUCE Duncan, President of Queensland Athletic League, was a little disappointed with the crowd that turned up to see the re-introduction of the Mulgowie Gift. He was, however, extremely happy that this annual event was once again on the Lockyer Valley's sporting calendar and said it could only get bigger from here.

Aided on the day by Vice President and Treasurer, Gary Warrener, both had fond memories of previous events held here. As they looked across the fi eld together, they marvelled at the beauty of the place and said how glad they were to be back officiating after a seven year break.

Both Life Members of the Q.A.L. Gary and Bruce were helped on the day by Steve Minns (Secretary) and Bob Cook (Handicapper) who also expressed their delight at the decision to once again hold this prestigious foot race.

Steve, who comes from Glass House Mountains, competed in the 100 metres Masters which was sponsored by McLean Images and Lockyer Valley Regional Council. He came home second. Other placegetters were Nathan Carr (Redcliffe) first and Adrian Nash (Buderim) third.

The winner of the 120m Mulgowie Gift, sponsored by Mulgowie Farming Company was Scott Toohey (27 years old) from Ipswich who is coached by Vic Pascoe. Both members of the Ipswich and District Athletics Club, Vic has been coaching Scott for three years now.

Scott won in 12.12 seconds (hand timing) when off a handicap of 15.00m. Laurie Upton of Toowoomba was 2nd when off a handicap of 12.00m. Isaac Dunmall of East Brisbane was 3rd when off a handicap of 9.00m.

P.J. Emmerson Accountant/Solicitors sponsored the womens 100 metres which was won by Kristy Knox from Nambour. Elizabeth Forsyth (Tugun) ran home second with Tamara Tisdall (Carbrook) taking third place.

Youths Boys / Girls Under 18 winners were sponsored by Buhse Motors and the Mulgowie Hotel with the winner being Jake Heard. Laurie Upton came second and Kristy Knox third.

The day finished with some fun activities including an iron man competition, egg and spoon race and other novelty events.

Despite some light rain and gusty conditions at times, the crowd stayed on and enjoyed the day.
