PATRICK BOX DOES THE DOUBLE AT NOOSA

Mooloolaba Beach Sprinter Patrick Box has capped off an amazing carnival by winning the Noosa SLSC Supporters Club 100m Gift and the Pacific Ford 70m. Box who was third last year stepped up a level to win off 10.5m from backmarker Tetteh Anang 5.5m and rising star James Woodgate third 8.5m. Box was stoked to take home the $3000 winners cheque and plans to focus on the upcoming QAL and Beach sprinting season. Other placings in the final were Sunshine Coast's Titus Talanoa 4th 12m, Qld 800m medalist Andrew Barrelet 5th 12m and evergreen Nathan Carr 6th 9.5m.

The Pacific Ford 70m final placings were Box 8m; from Osaka's Hidemitsu Ozawa 12m, Diving Champion Mitchell Neuendorf 10.5, Mowless Josh McCabe 4.5m, and Rachel Crothers 14m.

The last event on the card was all about excitement with 17 runners going head to head for the cash prize. In the end it was a battle of the McCabe's with Josh off 20m accounting for his brother Andrew off 12m and David Rose 31m a gallant third. Josh was heard to say before the race "as long as I beat my brother" with a win being an extra bonus. Well his wishes came true but Andrew was hunting him down in the end. Other placing were Samuel Cook 15m 4th, Corey Cottrell 15m 5th and Isaac Dunmall 25m 6th.

The Murray and Associates Ladies Invitational was won by 400m specialist Emma Lawrence 4m, from Gavin Hunter coached Nikki Venardos 2m and Gold Coast Master Michelle Mackey 5m 3rd.

Teen proves he's quick off the mark

KAWANA teenager Patrick Box burst from the blocks to claim victory in the lucrative Noosa Gift at Tewantin yesterday.

The 18-year-old, who had earlier triumphed in the 70m Dash, bagged the coveted double by winning the $5000 100m feature race at Read Park.

"After the 70m race my handicap got moved back so that played on my mind a bit," he said.

"I went from 11m to 10.5m so it wasn't a lot, but in a short race it can play on your mind because it all comes down to the last centimetres.

"But I put that behind me and I raced well I think."

Box hit the line in a time of 9.910 seconds, finishing ahead of backmarker Tetteh Anang (10.04 seconds off 5.50m) and James Woodgate (10.06 seconds off 8m).

"At probably the 95m mark I was confident I was in the top two but I just left it up to the judges from there," he said of the close finish.

A Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving club member, Box is a strong beach sprinter. But yesterday he proved his wares on the turf.

"Running on the grass on the track is great fun (because) you can get a lot more speed up," he said.

Box competed in the Ipswich Gift this year and made the final in the coveted Fairholme Gift at Toowoomba in 2009.

"That was my first one (but) this is easily my best success," he said of yesterday's display.

Box also improved on his efforts from last year's Noosa carnival, when he claimed second place in the 70m Dash and third place in the 100m Gift.

Now with the $3000 winner's cheque in his grasp, Box will turn his attention back to the beach.

"I think I'm going to focus on our beach sprinting now. We've got the fastest man on sand series coming up so I'm going to knuckle down and get into that," he said.

"We've had one race down at the Gold Coast and the next couple of rounds are at Redcliffe Beach.

"I competed at the Gold Coast and didn't go too well in my sprint but I came fourth in the flags and our relay teams did all right there."

Meanwhile, one of the pre-carnival favourites, Andrew McCabe, failed to reach the final.

The Ballarat Gift winner and Stawell Gift placegetter was bundled out in the semi-finals.
